Call for papers

Lithuania joined the European Union in May 2004 and Lithuanian became one of the official languages of the EU. It was an unprecedented challenge for Lithuanian translators and interpreters because the profession as such did not previously exist. With years, our confidence is growing and the society’s awareness and appreciation of the professions of a translator and an interpreter is rising too. Today people see that translation (and interpretation!) is the language of Europe that allows communication among different nations and makes all – big and small – equal.

For the past fifteen years, the Department of Translation and Interpretation Studies of the Faculty of Philology at Vilnius University, Lithuania, has been the leading research centre in the field of translation and interpretation studies in Lithuania. The two previous conferences held in 2003 and in 2007 enjoyed a great success and stimulated research in this relatively new field of study. The organizing committee intends to continue this tradition and invites papers that discuss various aspects of translation and interpretation to be presented at the third international conference on translation and interpretation studies, “Translation is the language of Europe” (Umberto Eco), to be held in Vilnius on 6–7 October 2011.
