COURSE UNITS

MASTER IN TRANSLATION
The course of Master in Translation is a 2-year (4 semester) study programme, 80 national credits (=120ECTS).
To enroll into the programme a candidate must pass an entrance examination which includes a test on the knowledge of A, B and C languages of the applicant.
Language A is Lithuanian.
B and C languages are:
English,
German,
French,
Italian or
Russian
(Spanish can be C language, if necessary).
The compulsory subjects include Translation Methodology, covering translation into Lithuanian (A language) from two foreign languages (B and C) and translation into the student’s B language;
Theory and History of Translation;
CAT;
Terminology and Terminography,
Editing and Revising and
2 elective courses from a range of subjects offered.
The course in Translation Methodology has been split into 4 modules of:
  • translation of general texts (1st semester),
  • translation of economic texts (2nd semester),
  • translation of legal texts (3rd semester) and
  • translation of political and EU-specific texts (4th semester).
Furthermore, at the start of the first semester, the topic of a Master’s thesis is chosen, to be written individually by the student under the guidance of a specialist within the field of research. The work on the thesis continues throughout the two years, the 4th semester being mainly devoted to its completion.

We focus on practical training of translators and on the completion of the MA thesis, which is defended in an open meeting. Until this year, graduates were awarded a degree of Master in Philology and the professional qualification of a translator. Starting with 2011, i.e. entrants of autumn 2010 will be awarded a degree of Master in Translation, because due to the efforts of the Department, Translation was entered into the national classification of the study programmes as a discipline in its own right. The students will be issued diplomas of Master in Translation. The programme has not been changed, only the title of the degree.

Upon completing the course in Translation, its graduates will have acquired the general academic competences, ensuring their ability
  • to perform specialist functions that require knowledge and skills in identifying, analysing and solving linguistic and communicative problems in a Lithuanian and international context;
  • to identify and solve problems in relation to the language and subject matter;
  • to apply theoretical and practical knowledge while performing translation tasks in private and/or public sectorenterprises, organisations and institutions;
  • to assume personal responsibility for the quality and completion of a work assignment;
  • to work methodically with complex and comprehensive material;
  • to be able to discuss and evaluate different theories;
  • to carry out and participate in scientific/academicactivities.
